Kanye: MTV Exploited Britney for Ratings

NEW YORK (AP) – Kanye West blames MTV for Britney Spears' less than stellar performance at the Video Music Awards. "Man, they were just trying to get ratings, and they knew she wasn't ready and they exploited her," the 29-year-old rapper said Tuesday on Sirius Satellite Radio's "The Morning Mash Up."

The network made a "bad move" by having the troubled pop star open Sunday's event in Las Vegas, said West, who feels he should have kicked off the show with "Stronger," the first single from his new album, "Graduation."

"They exploited her, they played me and I really don't mess with MTV," he said.

Spears, 25, looked unprepared while performing her new song, "Gimme More," to a bewildered audience of her music industry peers. She seemed nervous and, at times, stopped singing altogether.

In a praise-filled statement released Tuesday afternoon, MTV said it "... has a long and collaborative relationship with Kanye and we hope and look forward to continuing that meaningful relationship."

West said he wanted to perform "Stronger" on the show's main stage – where R&B hotshot Chris Brown wowed the crowd with Michael Jackson-esque dance moves – but complied when he was asked to host a suite party.

West said it was a blow to the ego when Justin Timberlake, who also hosted a suite party, ended up "on the big stage" to give the closing performance with Timbaland and Nelly Furtado.

"Those are the big things, and you know what I do man, I really made the song `Stronger,' you know, for stadiums," he said.

West – who threw a tantrum backstage after losing all five categories for which he was nominated – said he has bonded with 50 Cent over what they view as disrespectful behavior from MTV.

"So why do you have me do `Stronger' in a suite, but you end the show with Justin?" he said. "I looked at 50 like, yo, we need to help each other as much as possible."

50 Cent has said he'd stop making solo records if West's new album outsells his "Curtis" CD in their first week out. Both albums were released Tuesday.

MTV is owned by Viacom Inc.

God, I'm really sick of Kanye's whining everytime he loses. Be a good sport for once!

I do think he's right about Britney though. I do think MTV tried to exploit her for ratings. It was way to soon for her to be performing again after all the problems shes had.

I think Kanye has a point. It's almost like they were setting her up for the fall, hyping it up, have people speculate about it, that it would suck...and then seeing it do just that, while throwing in cruel jibes about her weight and appearance (which has been greatly exaggerated, I think), into the mix. But I'm really not too surprised, remembering what they did to Michael that year, with the fake award on his birthday, having him make this big acceptance speech then laughing at him....it's almost like MTV likes to knock down the people that helped build them and their ratings up in the first place. It's not even really 'music television' anymore, anyway...psh..:bs

It just gets old, seeing the same person picked on, for stupid reasons, over and over..you know?

yeah he needs to stop whining. BUT he is right about Britney. the VMAS are a damn joke now. no one cares now. they probably wont last for the next 10 years. its pathetic. they lost they 'umph'. AS much as im sick about hearing about Britney, they gotta cut her a break. and she needs to cut herself one.. and just try to focus on getting things together. MTV sucks. simple. i mean... The Hills?? what the ****?? I understand The REal world... but 'The hills' ? PATHETIC!!

I think MTV is getting worse and worse...
even with Britney it's playing badly:glare:
I saw Britney's performance twice (on the Internet); it's true she seemed like a bit unprepared (in my opinion, of course), but some of the negative comments I heard on MTV were quite exagerated.

There's no limit to people's sillyness...

the news always takes things overboard. they just find the smallest things to talk about. first it was the performance in its self...now its an issue about her weight and the way she looked in the bikini. these news anchors annoys me

I agree that they exploited Britney. She seems so vulnerable and out of it right now. It really seems like they knew she wouldn't perform well but would get ratings; they cared much more about rating and attention than actually having a qaulity program. And it was crap. And they hurt Britney in the meantime..its like they put her up there just so people could laugh at her and throw (metaphorical) tomatoes. Poor Brit. She needs to be back in rehab right now, getting healing, support, and prayer, not on stage in front of the world!

Maybe I'm imagining things, but I thought he had said something negative about her right after the award show?

I think Kanye is bipolar. lol
