Shoot. I wanted to check into see if Chris Brown was going to do anything 'MJ'-esque at the VMAs. Did anyone see it? I think I caught the last of something. :idontknow

Aw man!!! I missed it! :(

By the way, why not make this an official mtv/chris brown thread? Here's some info about the show in general:

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer 4 minutes ago

LAS VEGAS - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing.

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards – but for all the wrong reasons. Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared – much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles.

She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

Some comeback.

The VMAs was hoping to reinvent itself on Sunday. After suffering poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years, MTV moved the show to Las Vegas' Palms Casino, shortened the show from three hours to two, and changed the show's setup to focus more on performances than awards.

To that end, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters were each hosting four separate suite parties, where much of the show's performances would be held.

Timberlake's suite was packed with revelers, alcohol and eight lingerie-clad stripper types on raised platforms. Before he accepted the Quadruple Threat of the Year award at his suite, the DJ summoned the partygoers to watch the monitor and go crazy if Timberlake won.

He did, they did, and Timberlake said: "I want to challenge MTV to play more videos!" Then he was whisked away by bodyguards and disappeared.

Meanwhile, Rihanna won Monster Single of the Year for her ubiquitous hit "Umbrella," and Beyonce and Shakira won Most Earthshattering Collaboration for "Beautiful Liar."

Other performers were appearing on the show's main stage, in front of an industry-only audience seated at tables, like at the Golden Globes.

The Palms' casino floor, already glittering with slot machines and blinking lights, was transformed into a dazzling red carpet, as the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Kid Rock, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Garner and a newly blond Nelly Furtado were among those who posed for the cameras.

And Nicole Scherzinger, making her solo debut from the Pussycat Dolls, gave a performance for the gawking fans, performing her new single with the rapper Lil' Wayne.

While Spears' performance was a showcase, others were delivered in snippets: Akon crooned a bit of his "Smack That" before an award was announced, while the cameras zoomed in on performances from Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters mid-performance in their suites, giving viewers the sense that they had happened upon an intimate concert.

It's clear that whatever alleged hatred there appears to be in the media, it certainly isn't coming from the general public who are absolutely clamouring for anything MJ-related in performances and music.

MTV has paid dearly these past few years. Remember when they treated Mike like he was a mental patient who suddenly came up on stage and made up an award out of the blue? You can call it karma or whatever, but the VMAs has been losing ratings/audience/hype/appeal ever since.

9:52 PM: Holy ****, they’re playing the first thirty seconds of “Billie Jean,” it’s like somebody lifted the shades for a moment. And Michael Jackson isn’t even here. Looks like some “surprise Michael Jackson appearance” check didn’t cash out. Or maybe Chris Brown gave his DJ the gang sign for “I’m dying out here, put on some music.”

Note this smart-ass insulted Mike in just the time posted above this one:

9:50 PM: A standing O for Chris Brown and one that is well deserved. Finally a little life. Think about that, MTV -- if you get talented people together and let them perform, oh I don't know, music, good things happen.

Thank God for Chris Brown

I never thought I'd say that, but I'll say it again -- thank God and the Moonman and the man in the moon for Chris Brown. It's not that I don't like the new VMAs format -- I love the whole "one night only," once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history thing (especially opposed to the old model, which was basically -- what? -- watch it tonight or any waking moment for the next month until you can't close your eyes without dreaming of that dude from Rage Against the Machine climbing the scaffolding). Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and 50 Cent in an "impromptu" collaborative performance? Nice. And I like how everyone's down with the folks, performing at the crowd level like they're real people (as if there weren't big scary body guards just off-camera ready to throttle anyone who actually touches the boldface names).

That said, I need a little spectacle, people! Sure, it was cool -- OK, really freaking rad -- when Cee-Lo was just on the floor rocking the crap out of the Foo Fighters. But no more sweaty bands looking like they just got done playing Lollapalooza back when Lolla was a tour, MTV! If I wanted to see Dave Grohl perspire, I'd pay an exorbitant amount of money to watch him do it through binoculars at some arena, all right? For the VMAs, I want some special effects, a little choreography and some hot little kid dancers, damn it!

Which is why Chris Brown is -- so far -- King of the VMAs, as far as I'm concerned. Dude didn't even pretend to have a microphone -- he just started freaking flying from platform to platform and busting a move with a couple of eight-year-olds. Now THAT is a VMA performance people. Even Mr. Quadruple Threat himself, JT, gave Brown props for showing JT "how old I am."

WAIT -- was there just a subliminal announcement from the Fall Out Boy stage that Britney's next?!

This year's VMAs are TERRIBLE!! Nobody onstage knows what's going on and the performances are awful (except for Chris Brown's bananas performance). It's like we're all at home watching an awesome party, but we're not cool enough to be invited. This is awful television and a perfect example of how MTV is bottoming out.

Now the Chris Brown/Rihanna performance was more up to speed for the VMAs. Too bad it's already almost half way through the show before that happened.

Thank you Rihanna for singing.

And Mr. Brown. I've seen Michael Jackson. You sir, are no Michael Jackson.
