Should I?

I am thinking of getting a makeover, I don't know if it's just a phase but I have been getting obsessed with the way I look and been wanting to fix it. I used to have issues when I was younger and now they have kind of resurfaced over the last few months especially. I think it may partly be due to a friend of mine who keeps showing me recent pictures of people from high-school and telling me how amazingly good looking they've become, they are so gorgeous now, yet giving me the whole 'oh you just look exactly the same as you always have', when I wasn't exactly the most attractive person on the planet back then. When I told my mother about it she said 'yeah, but it was back then'.
I can't say my mother has been my greatest advocate in regards to my self image, she's made a few comments before that have been rather shattering, being my mother and all.

I have a savings account with $10,000 in there, I was thinking of taking out $1,000- $1,500 and buying all new clothes, make-up, getting my hair done properly, etc.
I have also been attempting to exercise more, I used to be thinner and have a better body until a run-in with some medication that made me put on 15 kilos in 6-8 weeks. That was a hard thing to go through because people were always telling me I was too thin and needed to gain wait/eat something, etc., then suddenly I was being told I looked pregnant, had people telling me I needed to do sit ups, was being poked in the stomach (literally one of the most degrading things someone could do). Then of course when I started to lose the weight I got the whole 'oh no don't do that! You look healthy!'. HEALTHY?! You told me I was fat!!!
I've lost most of the weight but it took it's toll.

I've been a bit negligent on my apperance because I kind of figured there was nobody out there worth impressing, but I think it would be a confidence boost.

Yes I have image problems. Yes I went through a phase when I was younger where I got caught up in my apperance to an unhealthy point. No I am not looking for compliments or attention (nothing is worse than a chick who complains about her appearance to get a compliment, I hate compliments).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Moral support?

Heck yeah go for it. Not saying you are bad looking. I've seen pictures of you and you are very beautiful. Your hair is awesome. But, change is good at times. You hit the nail on the head saying how it is a confidence booster. I think 1,000-2,000 is more than enough to get some new clothes that fit who you are now. You could get some accessories, makeup if you're into all that...I'm not really into heavy jewelry myself. But I do like makeup. I wear mostly foundation to hide my dermatitis. And hey you can even go to the salon to treat your hair to a little TLC.

I've been a bit negligent on my apperance because I kind of figured there was nobody out there worth impressing, but I think it would be a confidence boost.

A lot of people think that if women want a make over it's either to get attention or have the attention of a certain person. It's not always like that. Yes you want attention but not the gawking, drooling, trying to get a quick feel type of attention. I would want the type of attention where someone, family member, or friend might go up to me and say, "Your hair is really shiny and silky. How do you do it?" or "Your shirt is so pretty. Where can I get something like that?" or even, "Hey you look really nice. You look different but I like it!" It's a confidence booster. It's not changing who you are.

Michael went through his make overs plenty of times. Remember how he abandoned his curls for straightness? He knew his female fans drooled over the curls but he stuck with the straight style for many years. Obviously he liked the change. In recent years his clothing style also changed but not completely. He wore mostly black (which I think looked Fabulous on him) and lots of boots. He would always wear loafers and white t shirts back in the day. Everyone goes through changes.

So I say...why not? Make that change.

Well, I mailed off my form yesterday, in approx. 2 weeks I shall be getting $2,000, woo hoo! I put some clothes on lay-buy today before they all disappeared (you know when you see something you want and by the time you get around to having money it's all gone). I also did a naughty and bought a few things, I got an AMAZING bargain on a dress, down from $70 to 9.85! Plus 3 bags and a short sleaved coat that my cousin and grandma think is a dress and I think is a coat (I will jsut keep to myself that I looked on the tag and it did say dress). I think I am going to end up buying a lot more than I expected, at first I thought $2,000 sounds like a lot, but then I started to think of everything I am buying, I have written a list, and the the list is getting longer and longer so I thought perhaps I am not going to get quite as much as I thought. But I put 8 things on lay-by and it was about $180.
I am getting new EVERYTHING, bags, shoes, make-up, clothes, underwear, jewelery, etc. I do like jewelery, I never used to wear a lot but I have quite a bit of jewlery now. I'm really into the peasant stuff, big bracletes, wooden, turqouis, silver. I am als considering getting a new camera, I do photography so I have a big camera, but my small digital camera doesn't work so I might buy a new one, there's something not quite right about taking this gigantic camera into the city on a saturday night-
1162o.jpg

I'm going to end up getting mugged. If I have any money left over I was going to get something for my mamma, something for my cousin and a small digital camera.

I'm really excited about it now, but I think by the time I actually get my money the novelty will have worn off.

I remember seeing this thread before MJEOL disappeared for a few days, and I had been meaning to reply.

Before I say anything, keep in mind that I am a guy. I guess we don't emphasize make-overs as much as girls. I would advice against a make-over, even though I considered it myself. I am a very frugal person, and I don't splurge. I also pay a lot of attention to how I spend my money.

I think I remember a while back you were trying to go back to school or you were trying to do something big but you didn't have the finances to do this. I would encourage you to look back at this and delay the make-over. You look great already.

Create a list of everything you need to spend money on in the next several years, and number them from most important to least important. Go with the most important. If there's nothing truly important, save the money. All people should always have at least six months in savings. If anything major happens (medical problems, fired from a job, etc.) that would require additional expenses or results in loss of income, you should always have enough saved up to last you six months. Anything less is playing with fire.

The frugality in me obviously shows.

I don't need to worry about this $2,000 being spent, I will still have $10,000 left over. I have a savings account that always has more money going into it, I rarely touch this savings account, I didn't even know about it until recently but my mamma made it when I was 3 years old. I have only used it twice before, once when I got sponsored to go to California when I was 20, and once when I bought a laptop to help me study. I am aprehensive with spending any money, I haven't touched these savings for over a year. But I am moving on from some past things in my life and this is my year to change, get my confidence back, get a job and money, take better care of myself and socialise more.
I don't have much money (obviously not including my savings), because I just finished studying so I have no job. My clothes are literally falling to peices, all my shoes and jeans have holes in them, my t-shirts don't fit properly, everything is just old. I can't even afford to buy a pair of pants, I need a job (I put out some resumes a few days ago), but of course I need clothes for that. I asked my mamma what she thought about using my savings to get a new wardrobe, etc. and she said go for it, I deserve it and want to make this year a year to change myself for the better. I always ask her what she thinks, although I can do whatever I want with it like I said I get aprehensive.
One of my new years resolutions was to exercise more, I want to get a few outfits to go jogging in because jeans and a t-shirt aren't exactly a great jogging outfit!

I'm not getting a huge make-over, just new clothes, taking better care of my skin (I have bad skin but I tend to air-brush my photos because I hate it), brightening my hair colour and MAYBE getting some long layers, because it's getting longer my curls are getting flatter and I like it bigger, and I'm going to get my nails done as an attempt to stop biting them, it's a really disgusting habit that I hate, I have the stubbiest fingers and I bite my nails so short that they hurt.

As for the big thing I was going to do, that was either studying or travelling, I decided to take this year off studying, and I have nobody to travel with that is reliable (well there is one person but she is going overseas already this year so we were planning on perhaps next year).

I have thought about this whole thing for a while, and it is an important thing. Not in a 'lets' go on a shopping spree!' way, I honestly dispise clothes shopping with a passion. Little things for my hair, jewellery, etc. I don't mind but clothes shopping- N-O.
I asked a lot of people about this and everyone has said do it, I understand your concern because I have had my own thoughts, but when I have to sew my handbag back together after the handle broke I think it's time for some new things...

I agree with Palmyra. I advise against it simply cuz I don't think you need one and should use your money for other things you need or want. Your a beautiful girl and I don't think you need a full makeover. I hope your not getting a makeover to please anyone or try to attract more boys. My girlfriend used to change her look to please her ex-boyfriends but when she was single and got away from them, she had a calm yet still girly look and very kick back and that's how she remains with me as her boyfriend since that's what I like on her, just to ber herself. Maybe its cuz Im the kinda guy that likes when girls are simple and not too over the top. Nothing is wrong with getting fixed up sometimes and trust me, I love classy girls but I don't think you need a full on makeover. Thats just me tho and since Im a guy, I'll get out voted in this department as usual =P

I don't care for guys at all, trust me, I am not even remotely looking for attention from anyone. Any guy who is only interested by what they see can hit the road! It is for me. I've already sent off my withdrawl form so I'll be getting my money in approx. 2 weeks anyway. When I say make-over I don't mean I am completely changing myself, I just mean making my hair a bit nicer (I haven't had it cut in 5 or six years after someone cut half my hair off as a joke, because- they were jealous), and new clothes and shoes because as I said, they are just falling apart. There is a personal reason behind all this, I don't want to get dramatic on you all so I won't divulge in my story, but it would be nice to start anew.

As Palmyra said the site was down for a while, and in that time I did actually make the decision to get some money. I was thinking about it for a while, I was going to%2

Nothing wrong with starting anew. :thumbsup

Guys...sometimes makeovers is more than just pleasing you guys ya know! :lol It's much deeper than that. It's more than 'looking pretty' or trying to get more 'hot' or whatnot. Sometimes it's a personal issue. As long as you don't go spending all your money on crazy, expensive name brand clothes (that is just the same as any clothing from Walmart or your nearby mall) then you'll be okay. You're being a bargain buyer..I like that! :lol

Ha ha ha! Your right. I was just making sure she was getting the new look for the right reasons, thats all =] No need to impress any guys when your already naturally beautiful! If a guy is not attracted to a girl's natural beauty, then he's not a real man. Thats what I always say =]

But good luck on your new look, Amy! Make sure to post pics when you get to where you wanna be so we can all see =]

Aw thanks guys! Although I am beginning to doubt the specific term 'makeover' now! I won't be looking much different, just BETTER. After recieving a few protests I have decided there will be no touching the hair, I am just going to take better care of it and grow it long like I've always wanted. It just frustrates me knowing that had my cousin not cut half it off a few years ago it would be the length I've always wanted it to be by now. She got her hair done the other day and I brought it up, she just laughed of course and I thought 'yeah you damn well laugh, then wait and see how freaking amazing it's going to look'. I think she was/is just ealous, I do get a lot of comments on it because the colour is aparently interesting (I think it just looks like hair), and because it's so curly. But soon it's going to be the most amazing hair you ever saw dammit! Like this-

(good hair day)

But longer and like that every single day (if you have curly hair you know it's not often you get it looking that good).

Okay so I'm just being hopeful...

But as for my clothes, I have been going through all my old stuff to decide what I am and aren't keeping and let me tell you, knowing all the new stuff I am going to be buying has brought out the realisation of just how **** the majority of my clothes actually are. I have lived on my own since I was 17 and am now 22 and in that time I have never had any opportunity to get some real clothes, except when I went to California when I was 20.

My new obsession- headscarves.

woman-wearing-headscarf_~x10284671.jpg

(^ I just think she is really pretty, whoever she is, and she has the same hair as me)

lacey-chabert-straight-hairstyle-with-head-scarf.jpg

I am SO like gonna buy some. And I am thinking of getting an LBD, I don't really wear dresses but I thought why not. And I also tried to found out my real bra size and I'm apparently a lot bigger that I originally thought. Oh yes it was important to tell you that thanks for asking. I was so excited yall were the first people I wanted to tell, I was going to start an entire thread about it. But then I thought 'no, it's your excitement not theirs'. But there it is guys, my rack is big. :wink

Feeling good about yourself is priceless :D At the end of the day, money is money. It'll regenerate itself haha. But having a better self-image/more self-confidence can REALLY make an improvement in your life.

Yeah. I know. I can't get my hair curly like that. Mine usually poofs up and spreads out. Triangle hair. Or better yet broom hair. Flat on top and poofy at the bottom. How do you do your hair? Or is it naturally like this?

Exactly! And when you have all new stuff it gives you that little bit of motivation you need to get started, like if you buy a new jogging outfit you just want to go jogging all the time.

It is naturally like this but I do add stuff to it to make it more defined. Mine gets poofy too if I don't do anything with it. I just wash it wash it with conditioner, then put some mousse or something in it to add a bit of weight to it so it doesn't frizz, then I just don't touch it until it dries. After it's started going dry I use my fingers to get rid of any frizz in top, etc. It's a bit of trial and error, it's hard to know what it's going to look like until it's dry.

Well, I'm pissed. I went to my grandparents house and there was a letter from my savings company, they still require ID so it's going to take another 2 freaking weeks before I get it!!! AND, the letter was dated 17th February- the letter came yesterday on the 24th!!! It took 10 days for the letter to even come!!! GRRRR!
