The List

The List

The lessons you should remember
Are written for you alone.
Only you know what really matters,
And what shouldn’t matter at all.
So keep a list near you
Of those things you want all to know,
The things that your mother taught you,
The things you cherish the most…

Remember that people hurt us
But that to forgive is divine.
You need not forgive the person
As long as you forgive the act…
Just think that nothing worth keeping
Will ever hurt you inside.
Think! To pretend you’re not hurt is a lie
But to seek revenge is a crime.
You weren’t put here to hurt others,
You were put here to breed peace.

Remember that people love you
And to tell them you love them, too,
You never know when someone
Might need to hear it more than you.
Even if they might not heed it,
Repeat it only for their ears…
Sometimes we need people to remind us
How much they want us near.

Remember that beauty is not what people are
But that beauty is what people do,
And that if anyone says you’re not beautiful
Their opinion matters much less than yours.
So give them a smile!–happiness breeds
Peace and those who are bitter need
All the serenity you can give.

Remember not to compete against others.
Only compete against yourself.
To try and do what someone else is doing
Is to lose the success meant for yourself.
Do what you were meant to do. There’s enough
Room for everyone’s success. Don’t feel bitter
If you lose and someone wins. It isn’t about the end,
It is all about the journey, baby. So if someone asks for help,
Don’t be afraid to give it. They’re not taking
Anything from you, but only giving.
The lesson you learn will be worth more than the prize.
This isn’t a race, dear. This is life!

Remember that if someone hurts you,
There’s no need to wait for them to hit
The other cheek. Don’t stay and be hurt again.
Have some dignity. Walk away.
Don’t stick around to fight.
It doesn’t mean that you’re a coward. The laws
Of physics are on your side!
Just think that it will take less energy to turn
Around than to stick around for the ride!

Remember that expectations are for actions
Not for people. People are not mind-readers.
Tell them what you want. Use your words, not
Your fists!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one will know
What you need unless you tell them first!
And when you’re afraid to ask for help,
Just remind yourself that you are never, ever alone.
No one’s world is ever that small.

Remember that you need not be a politician.
Your words need not have double meanings.
Be direct, kind and concise. Don’t ever say things
That might hurt someone’s heart.
Speaking is a talent so try to make sure
Yours is an art. Say things with patience
And conviction. Don’t be afraid to cry
If the moment presents itself.
Want a tip? Speak slowly, moderately, and loud.
People that do that always stand out.
This is the secret of diplomacy–this is the secret
Of life! Just think that originally people used French
Because it sounded so smooth and sweet.
So romance people with your sentences!
Don’t say things that you don’t mean…
And smile when you’re finished
Because good artists don’t end on a bad note…
It’s part of show.

Remember that you need to let go in order for
Things to come back.
The secret is to learn when to go with the flow
And to learn when you need to fight.
Don’t ever waste
Too much energy on the battle
Because you might need it
For the war. But don’t let that prevent you
From always giving it your all.
The lesson is in moderation–Think! Nothing
Is given away for free. Too little is lacking
And too much is excess. Take only what you
Need and don’t be afraid to leave the rest.
If you need more, you will get more, but
Only because you left some to begin with.

Remember to pray when times are good,
Not only when times are hard.
Take a minute of your day to recognize
That the miracle isn’t in sudden success
But in waking up.

Remember that only special people
Need not drink to have fun. So put
Away the liquor. Show your personality
For a change. Instead of smoking outside
Take a moment to remind yourself
That each cigarette that hits your lips
Is five less minutes you have to live!
Special occasions are not excuses to be drunk
With wine. Be drunk in happiness. Be drunk
In love. You’ll find it is cheaper, and healthier.
Use the money to educate yourself.
At the end, it’s the only thing, other than love,
That you can take with you. The lesson?
Invest in yourself! Think long-term, not short-term.
Yes, everyone dies from something, but it
Doesn’t have to be today!

Remember to go outside at least once a day.
Exercise. Eat a good meal.
Have some candy. It’s good for the soul.
Forget all the times someone told you that you look
Too thin, too fat, too whatever it is. What’s
Important is not aesthetics, but the health
Behind YOUR OWN perfect waist–whatever
Size this might mean. Run to get rid of sadness
Not away from your tribulations. The former will
Give you endorphins to make you happy, while
The latter might only cause you problems. Be
Strong. Stand tall. Deal with things head-on.
There’s nothing you can’t accomplish as long
As you have health. And if you don’t have it,
Then make sure you have faith. Life is never
Night forever. The Sun always comes out.

Remember that home is not a house,
And that church is not a building.
Both are found deep within your heart, not
Necessarily in brick.

Remember to love yourself.
It might be sad to accept, but sometimes
You’re the only one that will. Trust me,
The things that physically seem to matter
Don’t matter as much as you might think.
You are only as perfect as you let yourself be.
Learn to be comfortable alone
Before you embark on an adventure
With someone else.
Sometimes we need to know silence in
Order to know what noise is.
Don’t be afraid of loneliness. Think of it as
Independence! Don’t be afraid of
Commitment. Think of it as support!
Confidence is an antidepressant!
Idolatry a form of self-doubt…
Know the difference between
Someone that loves you, and
Someone that worships you.
One actually knows you,
The other simply pretends.

Remember that you can color
Inside the lines without being like
Anyone else. You can pick your own
Colors. You can even make shades.
Being different is not being rebellious.
You need serenity to really know yourself,
So don’t let people trick you into thinking
That those who wreak chaos are trying to
Set themselves apart–they’re simply looking
For attention. Being unique is not being fake.
To be eccentric is not a crime, so
Don’t be afraid to let loose…
To those that care it won’t matter.
And face it, you don’t care about
Those to whom it matters.

Remember that what is good
Is not always beautiful and that
What is beautiful is not always good.
But something that is good can be beautiful,
Just as something that is beautiful can be good.

Remember that you choose your own ending.
No one can write it for you.
Know what you want and how to get there,
Or learn how to plan each step at a time.
To leave your options open takes more energy
Than to have a set plan. Those that know what
They want need less skill than those that don’t…
So if you’re not sure what you want yet, don’t
Waste time thinking. Spend time preparing
For whatever may come. And if you do
Know what you want, always be ready
For the changing tide.
Destiny has no friends or enemies.
It doesn’t choose a side.
What you dream in the morning might not be the same
Dream you have at night.
So just keep dreaming. Always. And when you find that
Vision that haunts you at all times, hold it tight
And never let go. Those come once in a lifetime.

Remember to cherish the times when life is gray.
They help you appreciate the times when life
Has color.

Remember that we’re all born to die,
Not to disappear.
So plant a memory in every person
That once taught you a lesson.

And finally, remember this, the day you read
This list. And make your own and hang it up
And read it when you’re down. Read it when
You’re glad that life is no longer sad. And then
Show it to others so that they can know why
It is that you are happy even when times are bad.
For it isn’t about knowing the secret, but about
Sharing it with love from the heart.
