On the heels of the Toronto International Film Festival's unveiling of part of its 2012 lineup, the Venice Film Festival has done the same this morning; and as we always do when festival lineups are revealed, we scrub each list to see if there are any films worthy of an S&A mention.
And I'm glad to report that Spike Lee's Michael Jackson documentary, in collaboration with the estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Music, titled Bad 25, will make its world premiere at Venice 2012.
The doc, said to be in its final stages of post-production, focuses on MJ's landmark BAD album and worldwide tour.
And more...
The project marks the first ever in-depth, behind the scenes film project to chronicle a Michael Jackson album, and is being filmed amid the 25th anniversary celebration of the iconic album, record-breaking world tour and groundbreaking short films that changed music history. The documentary features over 40 interviews conducted personally by Spike Lee with Michael's confidants, choreographers, musicians and other collaborators who collectively unveil the real story of this "coming of age" project through their vivid recollections of what it was like to work day in and day out and live this project with Michael. BAD's lasting influence is captured through interviews with some of today's top artists, including Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Cee Lo Green and Sheryl Crow, who was a back-up singer on the BAD tour.
Spike Lee, who directed both short films for Michael Jackson's They Don't Care About Us in 1996, said in a press statement: "I'm more than just a huge fan of Michael Jackson, and having the chance to actually know him and work with him, I deeply care about his legacy. With this BAD project I was able to uncover just what made this such a huge, important coming of age in his career and unearth compelling stories surrounding the making of the album, the long awaited follow-up to Thriller -- the best selling album of all time - the short films and the tour that may have never seen the light of day."
The album, the third and final album collaboration for Jackson and Quincy Jones, was #1 around the world, made history with five consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard chart, produced ten chart-topping singles, was nominated for six Grammys and won two, and to date, has sold over 45 Million units.
Spike Lee's film supports the 25th anniversary of BAD, which will also be celebrated with the September 18th release of BAD 25, a deluxe package featuring three CDs, two collectible booklets, and features the first-ever authorized DVD release of a concert from the record breaking BAD tour, the concert at Wembley Stadium on July 16, 1988 attended by Princess Diana, Prince Charles and a sold-out crowd of 72,000 fans.
A BAD 25 two-CD standard edition, featuring the original album plus the CD of demos and new remixes, will also be made available as will a stand alone edition of the DVD and a picture disc of the original album.
The Venice Film Festival runs from August 29 to September 8.
While you wait, here's a short clip from Spike's film (and underneath it, you'll find a promo for the BAD 25 Wembley concert):

While he's still hopingto get his "Brooklyn Loves MJ" project off the ground, as he told us last week, Spike Lee's been able to scratch his Michael Jackson itch; hot on the heels of the release of "Red Hook Summer," he'll unveil "Bad 25," a new documentary about the creation of the pop star's seminal record, at the Venice Film Festival (where he'll also get a lifetime achievement award) in a few short weeks. And it was announced this week that Lee will also be bringing the film to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Given the high quality of Lee's documentary work so far (you can read our take on these projects in our retrospective of the director's work from last week), we're expecting this to be a cut above the usual music documentary, and some first-look images from the film, which reveal participants like Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, ?uestlove and Mariah Carey, suggests that this should shed some interesting light on the 25th anniversary of "Bad." We'll be bringing you our verdict on the film in a few weeks, but in the meantime, check out the images and an official synopsis below.
Spike Lee pays tribute to Michael Jackson's Bad on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the epochal album, offering behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson recording the album and interviews with confidants, musicians, choreographers, and such music-world superstars as Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey
Bad 25 features captivating behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions for several of Bad’s biggest songs ("The Way You Make Me Feel" being among the most memorable). There are also revealing interviews with a number of fellow artists who worked with Jackson – such as Sheryl Crow, with whom Jackson shared the duet "I Just Can’t Stop Loving You" on stage during the Bad world tour – and those who were inspired by him, including Kanye West, Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey. Lee offers us a more intimate side of Jackson, one rarely glimpsed amidst the glitter and circus-like atmosphere that surrounded the notoriously private superstar, especially as his personal life (and appearance) became a scandal-rag mainstay in the years that followed Bad. As the landmark album takes shape before our eyes, we see Jackson’s dedication to his craft, his talent for inspired collaboration, and his sly sense of humour – as well as some hints of the toll that his relentless work ethic had on his psyche..
